Four-old increase in inter-caste marriages to dalits in Maharashtra: National figures up

MUMBAI, Maharashtra : As national figures for inter-caste marriages involving dalits are on rapid rise, Maharashtra records country’s highest rate with four-fold increase in such marriages. Here,  2,296 marriages between dalits and non-dalits have been recorded in 2012  as compared in meagre 563 marriages in 2011 and 628 in 2010.

To encourage the trend that wanes caste-hostility, the Centre pays up to Rs. 50,000 to each inter-caste couple that has one dalit spouse.

National figures for people tying knot with dalits has touched a record high of 9,623 in 2012 from 7,617 in 2011 and 7,148 in 2010.

These numbers however, are lesser than actual such marriages, the figures being based on only those couples who come forward to declare the marriage and claim incentive, clearly excluding the upper middle class and above .

Karnataka and Kerala follow Maharashtra closely. Interestingly, in Tamil Nadu where caste hostility takes ugly turns in such marriages, the figures rose to 2,750 from 2,356 in the previous year.

Former head of Scheduled Castes cell, K Raju ,IAS said “It is a positive sign  and marks growing  acceptance of inter-caste marriages, a step towards casteless society.”
